Stocksbridge Tennis Club opened its 2014 summer season with a visit from the charity Bright Ideas for Tennis. Former GB Davis Cup stars Danny Sapsford and Luke Milligan ran masterclasses for members and friends of the club and played two exhibition matches. Danny and Luke were helping the club raise funds for court floodlighting and free coaching in the community for our planned cardio tennis and Tennis Xpress for new players to learn the game.
It was an amazing day, with great masterclasses. Danny & Luke were really special and the weather held up! There was fun exhibition matches with super ball boys and ball girls well trained the day before by Matthew. The highlight was Matthew and Luke taking the first game in the their exhibition match! Mike & Josh also repeatedly stopped a doughnut on their tie-break finale.
Thanks to the many members who contributed beer, burgers and cakes and raffle prize, and worked on the day preparing the courts and clubhouse, baking and serving coffee and cakes and selling raffle tickets and burgers and of course all those who came along and made the day so good.
The funds raised will go towards for floodlighting, new tennis in the community schemes with Cardio Tennis and Tennis Xpress for new players to learn the game.
Stocksbridge Tennis Club encourages all ages and abilities to play tennis for fun, exercise, health, community involvement and personal success.
It has grown its membership since 1999 and now has approx 163 members playing in 16 adult and 7 junior tennis leagues and runs over 450 coaching sessions and over 100 social tennis sessions. All ages from senior citizens to children as young as 4 are encouraged to join in, learn and improve and have fun playing tennis.
Mega thanks to Danny and Luke for a brilliant, sparkling and uniquely fun tennis fundraiser! The legacy these two delightful gentlemen left behind will enable Stocksbridge Tennis Club to provide additional coaching resource to reach out to even more youngsters in our community (a much needed boost to our current voluntary over-stretched coaching limitations). In addition some of the funds raised will go towards the long term goal of lighting to enable our community to play tennis play for longer all year round. It is a truly wonderful thing they have done for our local community! Claire W, Club Member
